Workshop I: Zoom Virtual Classrooms and Blackboard Learn to Collaborate

Zoom and Blackboard Learn Collaborate are two popular virtual classroom and meeting systems. In you will develop an understanding of how to facilitate engaging lectures, custom tutorials other teaching and learning activities online using both Zoom and Blackboard Learn to Collaborate. This course will cover hands practical skills in using Zoom and Blackboard Learn to Collaborate and explore how virtual classrooms are used at colleges and universities for teaching, learning research.

Participants will familiarize themselves with the use of chat, wikis, blogs, webcams, whiteboards, websites, polls, social media and emoticons for communication in the virtual world. Participants use the presentation area to view and interact with local Information Technology Services (ITS) available to them to connect to the workshop site.


All training and Webinars are offered in a virtual classroom format.


The workshop in virtual classroom format will be led by a trainer and conducted using Zoom and Blackboard Learn to Collaborate. To participate in courses in this format you will need a computer with Internet/ broadband access, webcam and a headset with an attached microphone.


The classroom link and setup instructions will be emailed to participants 3-5 days before the start of the session. To allow instructions to be sent out you must register for the online courses at least 5 days prior to the start time, minimum 3 days.


This five (5) course modules will enable participants to:

  1. Appreciate the range of possibilities for the use of virtual classrooms in teaching and learning.
  2. Setup and manage a virtual classroom or meeting room.
  3. Use different communication and feedback methods to “flip the classroom” from passive to active learning.
  4. Use image files, videos, applications and the whiteboard in presentations.
  5. Record virtual classroom sessions.

Workshop 2: Creative Course Site Design in Blackboard Learn

This hands-on course includes five (5) modules to explore course site design and building.


Bring your Blackboard course site, content ideas. We will help you to design and build a course that looks professional and supports your students' learning.

You will work through orienting and welcoming students to your course using real-time tools. Help your students by developing navigation that enables students to spend their time learning not "wandering". Course graphic design is introduced and practiced in this course. Explore using Blackboard features that make your site work for students. Learn to present online resources so they can be easily accessed and downloaded by students when required for hands-on work.


This course assumes you are familiar with the content of the Blackboard Basics course.


This course will enable participants to complete:
